Everyone knows the book The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony. This is a ‘follow up’ to the book by Lawrence’s widow, Françoise.
Coming from French city life it was a life changing experience when she first met and fell in love with South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony. They founded the game reserve, Thula Thula, together but after Lawrence’s unexpected death Françoise was devastated and then she had to face the daunting responsibility of running Thula Thula alone. Poachers attacked their rhinos, the security team wouldn’t take orders from a woman and the authorities were threatening to cull their beloved elephant family. To top it all, the herd’s feisty new matriarch, Frankie, didn’t like her.
This is a heart-warming book which describes how Françoise fought to protect all her animals and to make her dream come true of building a wildlife rescue centre. She found herself caring for a lost baby elephant who turned up at her house – literally walking around in her kitchen, offering refuge to traumatised orphaned rhinos, and a hippo called Charlie who was scared of water.
